ANNE TOOK a deep breath as her lady’s maid appeared beside her in the mirror.

“Are you ready, my lady?”

“No.”

Bridget hesitated at that, but then Anne managed a smile for her and shook her head.

“I only meant that I will never be ready to see myself,” she replied. “You can go ahead.”

It was time that the bandage come off, time that she see how she looked once more. Ella had told her that once the wound began to close, she should let the air reach it to allow it to heal. Anne took a deep breath as Bridget began to peel back the bandage. It didn't hurt, not any longer, for which she was glad. As to how it now looked….

Anne shut her eyes tightly, recalling the last time she had seen it, hoping that it was much better now. She hadn’t been looking in the mirror when the physician had tended to it so she hadn't actually seen it since … at the inn with Christopher. When he told her he no longer wished to marry her.

She exhaled and opened her eyes now, sure she could hear the slow thud of her heart in her chest.

She peered into the mirror. Her scar was no worse, though she didn't think it looked much better. It was still raised, though slightly less red, if anything. Suddenly there was wetness on her face, and she lifted her finger to catch a tear.

“Are you all right, my lady?” her maid asked with concern.

“Yes, Bridget,” she replied, determined not to allow her despair to show. “I am simply being foolish. I knew what to expect, and yet I hoped for a different outcome. No matter. Thank you for your help.”

Bridget nodded, and after casting a worried look over her shoulder, she left, shutting the door behind her.

What would become of her life now? She supposed she could try again for the stage, only this time she would be playing the role of villains and wicked stepsisters. No one would want to hear her sing, to witness her playing the part of a heroine. She supposed there may be some desperate sod out there still willing to marry her simply for her dowry and the connection to her brother. The moment the thought entered her mind, though, she pushed it away. She would rather spend the rest of her days alone than with someone who cared nothing for her.

Well… She straightened her shoulders. There was nothing else to be done. This was the way of it. With despondence refusing to leave where it had taken root in her core, she stood and left the room, on a mission now to find the housekeeper to tell her to remove the mirror from her chambers.
